Taylor Swift is now person of the year for Time magazine.
She has officially beat out King Charles, Vladimir Putin, and Barbie. She had quite the competition. It seems Time made the right choice as Taylor clearly garnishes the most attention of all.
This is the comeback story that we all crave. She once told Time “Make no mistake-my career was taken from me” regarding her cancellation in 2016. Remember the hashtag #TaylorSwiftIsOverParty. That trend caught steam after Taylor Swift shaded Kanye West in a Grammy acceptance speech. This was because Ye rapped “I made that b*tch famous” on his infamous track “Famous” which referred to Taylor. Kim Kardashian then wife of Kanye posted a video of Taylor approving the lyrics before the track dropped. The mob promptly sided with Ye and trashed Taylor.
Taylor did not respond well to this. She ended up in a bad mental space. She told the Times “You have a fully manufactured frame job, in an illegally recorded phone call, which Kim Kardashian edited and then put out to say to everyone that I was a liar,” This is probably true, but I love the chess move from Kim K. “That took me down psychologically to a place I’ve never been before. I moved to a foreign country. I didn’t leave a rental house for a year. I was afraid to get on phone calls. I pushed away most people in my life because I didn’t trust anyone anymore. I went down really, really hard.”
This was a couple year period of suffering along with some bad personal relationships that made matters worse which brings us up to 2019. This year Taylors Swifts former manager Scooter Braun, (celebrity manager of Kanye West, Kim Kardashian, and Justin Bieber) buys the rights to her masters. In a 300 million dollar deal her catalog was purchased leaving her out of the master’s ownership. She has the rights to royalties but not the actual masters. Taylor wanted the chance to buy her own catalog but was not given that opportunity. She took to Tumblr to vent her business mistakes. Boo-hoo Taylor this is the story of most the artists out there. You can’t be one of the greatest artists in the worlds and a business super genius. Unless were talking about Jay-Z here. But he’s the exception.
The point is Taylor Swift was down bad. She slowly rose from the ashes like a phoenix. After encouragement from Kelly Clarkson saying “just redo them” and her dad saying the same thing Taylor decided to do it. Go back rerecord the master to her own music and see if people would rebuy it. And they did. It took years but now Taylor Swift owns the rerecorded version of all her original songs.
It’s been all up from there. She booked a World Tour of 21 countries with 150 shows. She dropped a huge box office hit at the movies and of course she happens to be dating the Super Bowl champ Travis Kelce.
Of course, Time magazine had to put Taylor on the cover! Who else? What did King Charles do except inherit a throne? Barbie?! Not even in the discussion. Maybe Putin could have gave her a run for her money but that’s an underdog story we cannot tell in the west.
So congrats to Taylor Swift for being Times Person of the year.
You deserve it.
